Effective professional dental care in animals requires general anesthesia.  When the proper precautions and protocols are followed, anesthesia is very safe.

In contrast, avoiding professional cleaning and allowing dental and periodontal disease to progress can cause life-threatening, life-shortening, conditions such as heart failure, kidney failure, and predisposition to blood clots (thromboembolism).
